125 years ago today Sheriff William Brady and his deputy George Hindman were assassinated by the Regulators. Did the Regulators premeditate the killing or was it a spur of the moment decision when they saw the lawmen walking by?
Who do you think was the lead man in that assassination? Billy the Kid got the blame for being the leader that day, but I believe he was going along with the others and it was probably Frank MacNab or John Middleton. What is everyone else’s opinions/comments about this event in the Lincoln County War?

Regardless of who's idea it was, the killing of Brady and Hindman was a brazen, and perhaps necessary act in the eyes of the Regulators. If the version holds true that they believed Brady and his men were intending to arrest McSween knowing that the escort by Capt. Smith had not been given as promised, they saw no other option to prevent McSween's arrest and inevitable murder. I don't believe the ambush was Billy's idea as his position in the Regulators hadn't reach that level yet, but certainly he was a willing participant. He and the others saw Brady not as a lawman, but a significant thug working for the Murphy/Dolan faction who had the authority of his badge to empower him.
I think it was a planned hit because in the first volley of fire the only person hit was Brady, all the fire went to Brady and Hindman and the rest of the group weren,t shot until Brady went down,i believe that shows that the regulators had discussed what they were going to do and they all knew who they were there to get.
I don,t think that The Kid led the ambush but i have no doubt he shot at Brady with the rest of the group before firing at Mathews.
