I recently saw the TV movie "The Johnson County War," (starring Tom Berenger, Burt Reynolds, and Luke Perry). It was a decent movie, but personally I think the REAL story of the Johnson County War is MUCH more interesting. I know this movie is a fictional telling of the story, but I wonder why such an interesting incident in American History has gotten so little attention, especially by filmmakers. Anyways, I was curious if anyone else was familiar with the Johnson County War and has seen this movie?

I 've heard about the Johnson County War in my study of American History, but never really knew it until I was surfing the Net for info on it and came across a website called Wyoming Tales & Trials. It sparked my interesting and I’m now trying to learn more. Then the other night the movie, I mentioned above, was on cable TV and I was rather disappointed (but Luke Perry did put on a good performance).
I’m looking out for a book called “The Johnson County War” by Jack Cage, it’s supposedly a good one and tells both sides of the war. I’m currently in favor of the homesteaders, but I believe in knowing both sides of the story, but I think afterwards, I'll still favor the homesteaders over the cattle barons.
Since I'm just getting into it, I'd loved to hear your comments on the Johnson County War and more on poor Nate.

I'm in favor of the homesteaders and cowboys. The big outfits were trying to railroad the little guys, and Nate Champion was the only one who would stand up to the big outfits.
Believe or not, most of the people who were involved in the Johnson County War were originally from Texas. So, I'm not sure if I should be proud of that or not.
The only reason I know anything about it, is b/c I saw a thing about it on the History Channel. It was called "Vendettas: The Johnson County War."
I finally saw this movie the other day. Actually it was on sale at Wal-Mart for $4, so I bought it to add to my western collection. I thought it was an OK movie, but not great. I thought Luke Perry was the only one that seemed to fit his role well. Also the movie was a lot longer than I anticipated!
