Some of ya'll may know who Lane Frost is. He was a Wonderful Bullrider, and a Wonderful person. He had time for everyone and anyone, even, when there wasn't any time. He was kind to all his fans from the oldest to the youngest. He was loved by everyone and everone loved him..and on July 30th 1989 at the age of 25.....he died. He was killed by a bull after riding it in Cheyenne. He is greatly missed. If you would like to know more about this talented Bullrider and wonderful person, go to lanefrost.com there you can learn more about him and even write in the Guest book that his parents read every month. It is a WONDERFUL site.
I know who Lane Frost is, and I remember hearing the news when he died I just wish the movie they did on his life was a more accurate depiction but, what else do you expect from Hollywood.
I know the movie very well, but I'm not too familiar with the real life Lane Frost. I actually know a team-roper that was once a bullrider until he had his chest crush by a bull and had to have some ribs removed or somthing....well anyways, he gave it up. He said he knew Lane and liked him a lot and when I asked him if Tuff Hedeman was really as obnoxious as he was portrayed in the movie, he said yes. He added that Tuff is a good guy, but he has a twisted sense of humor. Then he went on to tell me about Tuff and Bodacious. Yikes, now there was a bull.

I remember the Tuff/Bodacious match up, Tuff's face looked like it was caved in...and blood everywhere! Bodacious did some damage to Terry Don West who rides the PRCA circuit now (last I heard, anyway). The owner ended up retiring the bull and it finally died back in 2000 but not before they collected samples to produce offspring.
My husband rode bulls for a time, but I never let him ride without a vest...thank god I did that though, because he rode a bull in Moriarity New Mexico one year, that stomped on his back pretty bad...in fact the bull shredded my husband's vest to pieces. The vest did it's job though, my husband was able to walk away with some bruises, scratches, and one very sore back...it could have been alot worse without that vest though!
Tuff said himself that the portrayal of him in the movie was pretty accurate. I met Tuff and Ty Murray a few times at some autograph signings and they have always been pretty nice.
Couple of questions, will you please explain a bit more about the vest, what is it made of? What is the name of the film you are talking about, is it a TV movie?
There's a movie based on the life of Lane Frost called 8 Seconds, starring Luke Perry as Lane Frost and Stephen Baldwin as Tuff Hedeman. It's a good movie; it follows the career and love life of a young famous bullrider whose tragically killed at the peak of his career. I would recommend it.
As for the vest, it's protective gear for bull and bronc riders. It protects their spine, ribs, and kidneys when they get thrown and stomped on. But I don't know what it's made of.

I think it may have been an American release only, given the subject matter, I do not recall it being shown over here. With regard to the vest, it would obviously have to be both light and strong, some type of plastic no doubt or could it be some form of Kevlar I wonder?
A word about the Movie 8 Seconds...it's a great movie, I loved it, but it's not so accurate according to the Frost family. They said that they were presented with different scripts and had to pick one, made thier recommendations, but those recommendations fell on deaf ears.
Now, about the vest...it depends on what brand and ho w much you pay for it. There are some that are vinyl, leather or canvas. (My husband's was a thick canvas type) On the inside I don't know exactly what material it is, but it's a very strong sponge type of material that is made to absorb the blows from the animals. Bronc and bareback riders use a very simular vest.
The movie was actually released back in the mid 1990s -you may be able to rent it.
As for the vest, it appears to be made of sturdy padding and has a high neck collar to protect the rider from whiplash. It's mandatory now for all riders to wear the vest, and some bullriders go one step further and wear a helmet and mask, similar to the earlier goaltender hockey masks.

I admit, this urban cowgirl knows next to nothing about the rodeo, but I'm wondering if you guys have heard Tom Russell's song, "The Eight Second Ride." It's on his latest CD, (the name of which escapes me and I also can't find it, so I think I left it at my daughter's place in NYC) and it's about the tragic death of a bull rider. The song is so sad and emotional that sometimes when I hear it, I almost start crying. In fact, I'd love to listen to it right now, but like I said, I can't find the doggone CD!
I have heard of Tom Russell, did his last album or the one before not win quite a few awards, was it not about an American journey? something about immigrants, cowboys and native americans? remind me please, but for god's sake, quote no lyrics, Loretta will whack you for sure, Ha, Ha
Having been in and around Rodeo for Many Years, and a Competitor in the Arena in Barrel Racing in High School. I have come to know the Rodeo World as well as I do Billy the Kid.
Bull Riding Vests are made of Kevlar.
I know Tuff Hedeman Very Well, and he and his Family are like Family to my Husband and I. We have been Good Friends with them for many Years.
As Cousins go, Ty and I are as Close as Billy and I are In Spirit.
What on earth is Barrel Racing?? Kevlar, yes, I imagine that it is both strong & light at the same time. I remember reading somewhere, someone saying that if we go back far enough, we are all related to each other, the theory was that all of the human race is decended from seven women, allegedly it was proven by using DNA samples from people all over the planet (except Texans of course, who are a breed apart) so in effect, you could be my big sister, now is that not a comfort to you?

Although I'm a Texan myself, I agree: We are a breed apart.
