What gambling games did Billy play?
Permalink Closed

I've been trying to research gamblin games that Billy played to earn money, but all I've come across was mention of a game called pharoah.  I did a bunch of research and all I could come up with was this game called "faro".

Is this it?  Faro is basically like roulette, but with cards.  Did Billy play poker?  Does anyone know which were his favorite card games or which were common in that period in that area?

The only game I've heard that Billy really enjoyed was Monte, and old spanish card game. Not the 3 card Monte scam-game, but the original 5 card monte is the one he enjoyed. I never read anything about Billy playing or really enjoying poker, though I don't doubt he played it a time or two. I don't know a whole lot about card games, but it's my understanding that Monte is alot like poker in a way.

Yes, Monte was Billy the Kid’s favorite card game and he had earned himself a good reputation as a Monte Dealer. I also believe he played Poker as well since that was a very popular card game of the day. As for what kind of card game was Monte, here’s one description I found in “The Cowboy Dictionary” by historian Ramon Adams:

“A card game of Spanish and Mexican origin, in which three players bet on a bottom and top layout of two cards each. A Spanish pack of 40 cards is generally used with no eights, nines, or tens, although sometimes only the nines and tens are discarded, and a 44 card pack is used. After the shuffle and cut the dealer holds the pack face downward, draws the two bottom cards, and places them on the table face upward. This is called the bottom layout. The pack is then turned face upward and the card thus exposed is the gate. If it matches in denomination a card in either layout, the dealer pays all bets which have been made on that layout.”

This description is a little confusing and vague  , but from my understanding it sounds like a rather unexciting game of chance. On the other hand, Poker is more of a “thinking” game and one would assume Billy would have preferred that one instead. Oh well….to each his own.

From what I've read, there are a couple of Monte games, one being the 5 card, and the other being a 3 card game...I read that Billy played the 5 card game which was the original. The three card game is more or less just a con game designed for the player to lose everytime. I don't play cards so, all I know about the subject is what I've read!
