Well, I’m not familiar with Wild Bill Hickok at all, so I don’t know how much help I can be, but after surfing the web I came cross this book that sounds good (and if anyone has read it and cares to comment, please do).

I also tried to find an official or “fan-type” website, so as to ask those that do know about Hickok and could be of better help to you, but oddly I couldn’t find one website. Yeah, there’s a bunch of “web pages” on various websites, but no “real” website (that I could find) about Wild Bill Hickok by one of his enthusiasts or researchers. If anyone is aware of one, could you please share with us?

Maybe Wild Bill is just not as popula these
days. I can recall being in the number 10 saloon
where they said he got shot. Then someone else
said that was not the original saloon after all.
It was sure wild in there, noisy and sawdust
on the floor.

Hey I just read your message, hope you get it:

I'm actually a big reader of Wild Bill Hickok. He's one of my favorites to read about, I can help you out in that area.

There are four major book on Hickok. The ultimate author/authority of Bill Hickok is Joseph G. Rosa. He's been researching Hickok since the sixties. He's published 4 books, I have them all so here they are:

1964 They Called Him Wild Bill: The Life & Adventures of James Butler Hickok, this is the ultimate Hickok biography. It seperates Fact from Fiction, those that know a lot about Hickok there's more Legend then man, its very complex to research. But Rosa did it, its the most factual biography on Hickok from beginning to end. Its the best book. Its 377 pages too.

1982 The West of Wild Bill Hickok, Like all Rosa's Hickok books there an absolute must, this one is 223 pages, its thourough. It has every picture that has been found of Bill Hickok, there all in this book, not only that but pics of cities/towns ie: Deadwood 1876 etc. along with Hickok's friends/families and foes, as well as his letters. It explains the history of the photo, the time taken, the book explains the history of photography and what the photographers used and their hardships thru the west. I guess Hickok was only two when the first American photo was taken in 1839. The book describes a thorough biography of the time and what occured with and around Hickok during that time.

1996 Wild Bill Hickok: The Man & His Myth, Another must have, its sections deal with legend/myth and a real man. It has all the legend stories and clears up curiosities of what really happened it sheds new light on the first book. It is 272 pages.

2003 Wild Bill Hickok Gunfighter: An Account of Hickok's Gunfights, a great book, new light has been added to this and its in great order, the title speeks for itself. 216 pages.

I recommend you read the 1964 book first, if your really interested I suggest you read all the books! As for other books, I'm not wasting my time reading them a lot or fabricated and such. Rosa's books include details of other publications and their wrong doings. I suggest you stick with Rosa's books if you want the ultimate truth that can be given of Hickok's life.

I hope someone reads this and responds to it.

Thanks.

There's actually been 58 movies on Wild Bill Hickok from the early 1910's to the 1990's. From Gary Cooper to Roy Rogers to Charles Bronson to Jeff Bridges they all played him.

I'm actually fortunate I seen Gary Cooper as Hickok and Jean Arthur as Calamity Jane in Cecile B. DeMille's 1937 movie "The Plainsman" Some people don't like it but I loved it!

But there hasn't been the ultimate Hickok film made yet.

You're welcome and no, I haven't  gotten to Wild Bill yet. Just the basics, but not in-depth.
