Here's an article in the Ruidoso News by Historian Drew Gomber:

James: ‘Robin Hood,’ or just plain ‘hood’?

I was wondering if you were a Jesse James buff. I've seen his biography, and heard other stories of him, including those in the movies, but I actually haven't baught any books. If you know any please share. And anything else you can.

Thank you.

Sorry, can't help you there. I don't have any "real" knowledge on Jesse James, I just know the basics and even then that might not be accurate.

I'm a Jesse James fan though Billy being new to me has taken up all my
book reading time lately. I have been to the house in St. Joseph where he was
shot and also the home he grew up in.

This link will not come in for me. I have seen Drew in a lot of western stories
on the History Channel.

The article that I have linked above was to the Ruidoso News web site, unfortunately that article has expired and is no longer available online -I couldn't even find it in the archives. Drew has been on TV a lot lately, particular on the Wild West Tech program (it's on the History Channel on Tuesday nights). Drew is a good historian; not only is he informative, but humorous and that makes his telling of history interesting and fun.

Say to add to the flavor of Jesse James Buffs out there, firstly, I'm not a buff but plan to shortly, for the past year I've been starting to read books on the 'westerners' anyway I recently did some research of Jesse James and if I'm wrong please tell, if not, well enjoy!

Firstly there's been a total of 42 movies envolving Jesse James and 30 of those he was the star. There also was 2 TV series' that featured him.

The best books to buy of Jesse James are:

1. (1998) Jesse James: The Man and the Myth (312 pages)

2. (2002) Jesse James: Last Rebel of the Civil War (528 pages)

3. (2000) Frank and Jesse James: The Story Behind the Legend also (528 pages)

Anyone of the4se books are argubally the best in their field!

They've been publishing books on Jesse James since his death in 1882, even his son Jesse Jr. published his book of his father in 1899. There's great info on various Jesse books and books concearning the history of him and those around him over at www.amazon.com and if you get the biography channel watch out for The James Gang Biography, its a good incite.

Hope this is of interest to anyone?

Defeat of Jesse James Days, Northfield, Minnesota
Permalink Closed

My husband and I live in Minnesota and last year attended the "Defeat of Jesse James Days" in Northfield.  Among the many activities offered during this 4 day event, is a reenactment of the robbery attempt on Northfield's First National Bank on Sept. 7, 1876.  The local townspeople do an outstanding job recreating this harrowing episode of citizenry courage as local citizen H.B.Grees yells  "They are robbing the bank boys" and residents grab rifles and ammo to blast the James Gang all to hell.  True West Magazine calls this reenactment one of the best in the country and I'd have to agree.

Minnesota author John Koblas has written several books on Jesse James Gang one of which I recommend, The Jesse James Northfield Raid - Confessions of the Ninth Man which focuses on Bill Stiles who was supposedly killed during the raid.......but maybe not.  I also highly suggest you read T.J. Stiles' Jesse James  Last Rebel of the Civil War which goes pretty deeply into the Civil War and post Civil War activities of the James brothers and their association with guerrilla leader Wm.Quantrill.  An excellent, excellent book that has to be read patiently and carefully.

I had the pleasure of attending a speech by Mr.Koblas this summer during which he included some little tibits about the Northfield raid such as that the horses Frank and Jesse rode out of town on were blind (they were later replaced), that over 3000 men joined in the manhunt for the escaped gang members, that the grand total taken in the robbery was $26.70. and the total time from start to finish of the raid was 7 minutes.  On another note, Mr. Kolbas, when asked by me if he thought Jesse and Billy the Kid ever met in Las Vegas, NM, replied  " Not very darn likely."
