Hey Marcelle I was wondering if you have any information of the following:

Did The Kid smoke? (wheather it was regularly, or occasionaly, wheather it was cigars/cigarettes or even chewing tobaco) If so you know any brands, or how often he did this?

Did the Kid ever play a sport? (ie: at the time baseball was the most popular sport, I've often wondered if he ever played it or watched it)?

Do you know of any of his favorite foods? (or what he just ate regularly)

I know he could read and right, did he read any specific books on anyone (ie: Kit Carson, Hickok when he was groing up in the '40's he took to reading Carson and some of the other old time plainsman).

Thanks. And any thing else you can muster, from routines to anything thanks.

Well, some of the answers are already found throughout my website.  Anways.....

There's conflicting info on whether or not Billy smoked, some accounts said yes and others said he never touched tobacco in any form (smoke or chew). In those days, majority of men smoked, chew or drank, so it's possible Billy did as well, but due to conflicting info on those habits I would say he did it in moderation and not heavily -if he even did at all.

As for sports, Billy favored horse racing. He not only liked to bet and watch it, but participated in it as well. He also liked competing in target shooting. Then of course there was card playing and he enjoyed Monte the most.

I have no idea what Billy ate most of the time or what his favorite food was. Because the Hispanic culture was dominating in New Mexico, he most likely ate a lot of Mexican-type of food. After his capture by Pat Garrett and on a train to Santa Fe, where he was to be locked up, he ate a lot of candy and pie, so I guess you can say he had a sweet tooth.

As a youngster Billy was an avid reader of books. What type of books? Probably the popular ones of his era like Mark Twains' Tom Sawyer. He also read dime novels, which were short fictional stories. As he got older he focused more on the newspapers and gazettes -probably to see what they were writing about him. In those days youngster didn't look to current figures of their era as role models, but just like kids today, they looked to ones in fiction or history. As a young boy in Silver City, Billy and his friends like to play pirates, not cowboys and Indians.

As for other tidbits on Billy, if you haven't already, I recommend you reading my web page Did you know...?

Marcelle,

I was wondering if there is any informationon this:

What The Kid usually wore. Did he wear puncho's?

Was he able to grow a beard, or ever attempted?

Did he usually have a tan, or naturally darker skin? (what shade of skin, or freckles etc.)

What color hair/eyes?

Did he like theatre, did he go? did he participate?

How tall was he/how much did he weigh?

Thanks.

I'm sorry Marcelle, I must be becoming a pain, but I must ask a few questions here and there, I'm terribly interested.

To add to my above questions, here are a few more. I hope you don't mind?

Aside from wheather Billy could grow a beard or not? Did he have sideburns, small, large? (ie: Like Emilio's from Young Guns)?

How did he wear his hair? (parted, longer style, shoulder length/caller length, short)?

I know he could speak Spanish, but could he write in Spanish? (also who else in his family spoke it? mother/stepfather/father/brother etc.)

I'm terribly interested in his relationships with people, especially his mother/brother, were they close? stepfather to, everything. Before Billy's mom died were they very close, do things together etc. When Billy's mom died his stepfather left for CA (I think) Billy stayed, but did his brother stay to? Can you branch into that and what their relationship was like.

You said in the Did you know? category that he attended religion, do you know what kind of religion he was? or the religion he attended?

As I stated, I'm terribly interested in Billy's relationships, in this particular sentence however, I'm very interested in the women in his life, I've read some about it, but it doesn't answer some of my questions. Before his outlaw ways like when he lived in town went to school etc. was there a special girl or girls? Did he have a relationship or something more? Was he shy around the girls?

Also you stated that he had a crush on his school teacher, how old was Billy at this time? How old was the school teacher, any photo's or descriptions of her? Did he ever tell her he liked her? Did they form a relationship, or kiss etc.?

You mentioned he supposedly gambled with Doc Holliday, had dinner with Jesse James and did a target shooting contest with Bat Masterson. Do you have any other info of this?

Thank you again Marcelle I appreciate the work that goes into your answers and of course your web site. I hope answering my questions doesn't become tiresome.

Jack.

Good Heavens Jack! That's alot of questions to fire at a person. Well, alot of what you're asking is already on my website or just isn't known. Other then what we see in the tintype of Billy the Kid, I have no idea how he combed his hair or how tan he was.  Billy learned Spanish from being around the Mexican people, so like most in that case he probably couldn't read or write in Spanish. We don't know much about his religion but his mother was married in a Presbyterian church and I believe the church services he attended in Lincoln was of the Presbyterian faith as well. As for facial hair…no, he was still a youth with fuzz just starting to grow on his upper lip when he was killed.  Billy and his teacher had a good student-teacher relationship and Billy would joke they were related because they were both amdexitous.  Billy was only 12-13 at the time, it was only a school boy crush -nothing more. Most of the answers you can find on my Biography web pag.

As I read a previous post Marcelle, you said Billy's mother was indeed born in Ireland and immigrated, do you have an idea how old she was/what year? Did she immigrate by herself? Or with her parents when she was younger?

So she must have always spoke with an Ireland accent? Did she like Billy speek Spanish fluent? I've heard here say that its even possible Billy was born in Ireland? what do you think? Did he have an accent of somesort? (ie: Spanish/Irish or regular New Mexican talk)?

Is the reason why people tend to think Billy was born either in Ireland or New York, is because Billy's mother when she immigrated she immigrated to New York? Also is there any story or history of how Billy and his mom traveled to various areas etc.?

I'm very interested in Billy's mom and their relationship. Did she teach Billy how to read and write, did she introduce Billy into singing and dancing? Anything you can tell me, I'm very interested. I also know there isn't much information on his mother, but whatever you can muster I will appreciate.

PS: I have another querry, Billy lived in a time where a lot of people were racist. Was Billy racist against the African Americans? Even was he racist against the Chinese etc.? I'm not sure about the Asian American history, with building the railway etc. Were Asian Americans highly populated in New Mexico?

Thanks Marcelle. Hope to here an answer.

Have you read my Antrim Family web page? Because majority of the answers are found there. There is very little known on Billy the Kid's mother, Catherine, and the early life of Billy the Kid, everthing I could possibly tell you is already on my website. As for answers to your questions that aren't found on my website.......

Questions: "So she must have always spoke with an Ireland accent? Did she like Billy speek Spanish fluent? I've heard here say that its even possible Billy was born in Ireland? what do you think? Did he have an accent of somesort? (ie: Spanish/Irish or regular New Mexican talk)?"

Answer: It's possible she spoke with a little bit of an Irish accent, which explains why Ash Upson (co-author of "The Authetic Life of Billy the Kid") said she was apparently of Irish decent, so he either figured that out by her accent or she told him when he was boarding at her cabin in Silver City. I don't believe Billy was born in Ireland; there's nothing to even suggest the idea, so some of those people are just making speculations. I lean towards New York or Indiana as being Billy's birth place, but quite frankly, we just don't know. As for Billy's accent, he probably sounded just like everyone else did in the Southwest.

Question: Billy lived in a time where a lot of people were racist. Was Billy racist against the African Americans? Even was he racist against the Chinese etc.? I'm not sure about the Asian American history, with building the railway etc. Were Asian Americans highly populated in New Mexico?

Answer: Billy didn't patronize the Mexicans, so I doubt he was a racist or at least a strong one. There's no record of him having any encounters with African-Americans, although there were buffalo soldiers in New Mexico. There were a fair amount of Chinese around the mining towns when Billy was a child. One story goes that the Silver City children will tease the Chinese and throw rocks at them, I have no idea if Billy took part in this.

The rest of what I can tell you is on my Antrim Family web page.

Hey Marcelle, this may be a stupid question but I've been running by it a few times today and thought I might ask:

Obviously during those days people stuck by it and wore their hats almost exclusively. Firstly do you know some of the hats the Kid wore? Did he wear a Derby hat? a regular cowboy hat and that sunbraro I know of, could you get into that abit, and what was his favorite etc.

Other then that did he ever take to wearing a cowboy hat with a long string with it. You know so if you don't want to wear the hat you just flop it down. If so did he take to wearing it on his head or down? Another thing was he more prone to wearing a hat, apposed to not wearing a hat? Both on the plains and in town and in someone's house?

Another thing some historic figures it is known of their hygene. (ie: did they stink, did they take baths exclusively) Did Billy the Kid believe in a good hygene, did he take baths regularly? Anything of that topic?

You mentioned he only had peech fuzz, so to it straight, he never shaved once? Also did anyone ever report he was harry? (maybe not Robin Williams harry but anything you know)

Lastly you said he gambled, did he do it exclusively, all the time, does that mean he had a lot of money? I suppose he could of made some good money as a cow rustler. Could you go into detail about his life and money, did he live highly, by for people, or buy nice things for particular women, children? Did he ever save anything, did he buy the best clothes/hats/pistols etc.

Thanks, so for bothering you again for petty little questions.

On a serious note….you’re asking me questions about Billy the Kid’s personal life and details that I (or anyone else) would have absolutely no knowledge on. I can only tell you what history knows about Billy. History doesn’t even know where and when Billy the Kid was born or who exactly were his folks, let alone if he had bad hygiene or how he wore his hat. Sorry, unless I had a time machine to go back and spy on Billy the Kid for a couple of weeks, these questions are beyond history or my knowledge.

P.S. What I can tell you is that Billy the Kid was a small scale rustler and yes he gambled a lot to pass the time -he didn’t have much to do besides running from the law or breaking it. He also had very little money most of the time. Just look at his tintype and see the clothes he’s wearing. He wasn’t exactly living high on the hog and took more handouts then he did buying.
