if the kid died-who got his horse-it was reputed to be one of the fastest around-someone wound up with a famous horse-the kids-just having that horse would have been a feather in anybodys cap-unless the kid disappeared on his horse.
The mare was taken before Billy's death -not after. The horse was indeed a fine animal and Garrett described her as having “speed, bottom (stamina) and beauty” and was said to have been the fastest horse in the territory. She was no doubt Billy’s most prized possession. When Billy was captured in Stinking Springs, he either gave the horse to Frank Stewart (who accompanied Pat’s posse on the hunt for Billy the Kid) or in a more likely version, that Pat confiscated the horse and gave it to Frank Stewart for helping him with the pursuit. Anyways, which ever the story, Stewart had Billy’s horse and when hotel owner Scoot Moore, gave him an expensive revolver as a gift on New Year’s day, Stewart in turn gave Moore’s wife the Bay mare. She would name the horse “Kid Stewart Moore.” The mare was then sent to the Moore ranch and what they used her for or whether they bred her is not known. The last piece of info history has about her was on April 29, 1883, when one of the ranch hands tried to catch her in a pasture she kicked him in the face fracturing his skull, but he would recover. Unfortunately, nothing else is known about one of New Mexico’s famous horses.
