There all kind of theories about that, some say residents helped Billy out of fear or symathy but on the other hand he was an out-law strange and he stole and killed so not everybody must have been his fan. My thought: I think they liked billy and had sympathy for him, maybe also because billy was a pain in the neck of the local rules which weren't always to friendly to the people.
You are right, it was Lew Wallace that wrote about that. He said that when he was in the jail in Lincoln that there were locals who came outside his window and sang to him. I am sure there is probably some truth to this. There were many females that really liked Billy, especially some of the native New Mexicans, it was probably some of them.
yes it is true every one loved billy except for those texans. it was said by alot of elders navajo and white that BILLY would kill a cow that belong to a greedy rancher and would share the meat with needy famlies all around. so when the law and bounty hunters looked for him the people say we dont know billy....but they would hide billy all the time.
I don't mean to get ornery, but what do you mean by "thoose Texans?" Do you not like Texans???
Let me remind people that back in 1836, Texas was ALOT bigger. By starting the Texas Revolution, and winning and San Jancinto we helped bring other states into the U.S. The states of New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, etc.
By OUR sacrifices other states were able to join the Union.
I agree. Enough of this Texas bashing (and it’s not just on this thread, but there’s been other unfavorable comments made about Texans on this Forum). I find Texans to be very patriotic and passion people that are proud of their history -and they have every right to be.
As far as that comment made above "every one loved billy except for those texans," I like to point out that the one place of sanctuary for Billy the Kid and the Regulators after the Lincoln County War was Tascosa, Texas. They met with no trouble or hatred there, which allowed them to recuperate from their troubles in New Mexico.
As far as Mexicans being the only people that liked Billy the Kid, I do admit he had plenty of Mexican friends, but need I mention that during the Kid’s trial an entire jury of Mexicans found him guilty and sentenced him to death. So much for Mexican favor eh?
Billy the Kid had friends and enemies that were Anglo, Hispanic and Texan. It really bugs me when some people have to make this into a "racial" issue.
